B. Sc. Nursing Scope, Cadre And Promotion Opportunities In India

Promotion Of Staff Nurse In RRB, AIIMS, ESIC and State Government Departments is done on the basis of Nursing cadre.  There are enough opportunities for staff nurse promotion in Indian railways, AIIMS and  ESIC where they can reach up-to the level of Nursing Superintendent and Chief Nursing officer.

Scope Of B. Sc nursing in private sector is less as compared to central government departments, because salaries in private sector are usually 40 percent lesser, especially at entry level. Similarly some state governments and contract jobs provides lesser starting salaries in the range of 30 to 45 thousand per month.

Below table gives the general cadre hierarchy for promotions in nursing in Indian government hospitals setup. Same principles in general can be applied to big private hospital.

First column gives the name of post and second column gives the Salary Level in seventh pay commission and corresponding Grade Pay .

B. sc. nursing is basic qualification required for this post. GNM are also eligible but now GNM course will no longer be conducted in India, so in 2019 minimum eligibility for staff nurse is updated to B. Sc.

Staff nurses are directly involved in patient care and maintaining ward hygiene. Generally this is an group C post. AIIMS recruit on this level with post name of nursing officer and in group B. This is a group B post.

After 6 years of experience in nursing field staff nurses can be promoted to the post of Assistant Nursing Superintendent. Out of 6 years minimum 3 years experience should be as ward in-charge. Nurses are further promoted to the level Of Deputy Nursing Superintendent (DNS)  to look after the nursing affairs in all the departments of the big hospital. Nursing Tutor or Tutor In Nursing

They are involved in teaching of nursing students. Recruitment is done on direct basic. 3 years experience in teaching institution is generally asked as eligibility. They can be further promoted to Assistant professor and Associate professors posts.

As you can see above the promotion avenues are great for staff nurses and nursing officers. Vacancies at higher levels exist in big hospitals and organizations. Small organizations have limited posts. In practical most nurses have to spend significant years at staff nurse or nursing officer level because number posts at entry level are high. Quicker promotion can be achieved through appearing in direct recruitment exams. Like AIIMS exam for Assistant Nursing superintendent.

However each year nurses get annual  increments and increased dearness allowance which is right of every government employee. Every 10 years at same post give automatic salary promotion to one level higher as per existing MACP rule.

Good luck for your Nursing career.
