There are many nursing courses and programmes in India. Popular nursing courses in India are ANM, GNM, BSc Nursing, BSc Hons Nursing. Higher courses in nursing are MSc Nursing and Phd Nursing. Here we will provide information about nursing courses and programmes in India.

First we will discuss the types of nursing courses in India and then we will explain the eligibility criteria for admission to each course. We will also inform about duration of each course.

Basic courses of nursing: If you do these courses you can register with the nursing council. Registration is essential for staff nurse, midwife and other nursing government jobs. Registration is also required for private job as nurse or self practice. Basic courses in nursing are ANM, GNM, BSc Nursing Basic, BSc Hons Nursing.

Additional courses in nursing: Recently in India nursing profession has progressed and higher education courses are being promoted to increase the knowledge of nursing professionals as well as to boost their career prospects. Additional nursing programmes in India are BSc Nursing (Post Basic), MSc Nursing, M Phil Nursing and PhD Nursing.

 

Eligibility and Duration For A. N. M. course

Age Limit For ANM Course: The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31st December of the year in which admission is sought. The maximum age for admission shall be 35 years.

Education Qualification For ANM programme:

The minimum educational requirements for ANM shall be 10 + 2  (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Economics, Political Science, History, Geography, Business Studies, Accountancy, Home Science, Sociology, Psychology, and Philosophy) and English Core/English Elective or Science

OR

B) Health care Science – Vocational stream ONLY,  passing out from recognized Board.

OR

C)Students qualified in 10+2 Arts or Science examination conducted by National Institute of Open School.

Duration of ANM course: 2 years

Mode of admission:

Entrance Exam conducted by Nursing Examination Board

Eligibility and Duration For G. N. M. course

Age Limit For ANM Course:  Minimum and Maximum age for admission will be 17 and 35 years. There is no age bar for ANM/LHV.

Education Qualification For GNM programme:

Minimum education: 10+2 class passed preferably Science (PCB) & English with aggregate of 40% marks.

OR

10+2 in Arts (Mathematics, Biotechnology, Economics, Political Science, History, Geography, Business Studies, Accountancy, Home Science, Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy) and English Core/English Elective

or Health care Science – Vocational stream ONLY, passing out from recognized Board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/SSCE/HSCE or other equivalent Board with 40% marks.

OR

10+2 vocational ANM under CBSE Board or other equivalent board with 40% marks.

OR

Registered as ANM with State Nursing Registration Council.

OR

Students qualified in 10+2 Arts or Science examination or Health care Science – Vocational stream ONLY conducted by National Institute of Open School with 40% marks.

Duration of GNM Course: 3 years

Mode of admission:

Entrance Exam conducted by Nursing Examination Board

Eligibility and Duration For B. Sc. Nursing Course

Below is the Eligibility condition for Basic B. Sc. Nursing Course and B. Sc. Hons Nursing Course.

Age Limit For B.Sc Nursing Course:

The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on 31st December of the year in which admission is sought.

Education Qualification For B. Sc. Nursing programme:

10+2 class passed with Science (PCB) & English Core/English Elective with aggregate of 45% marks from recognized board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/SSCE/HSCE or other equivalent Board.

OR

Students appearing in 10+2 examination in Science conducted by National Institute of Open School with 45% marks.

Duration of B.Sc Nursing: 4 years

Mode of admission:

Exam conducted by University

Eligibility and Duration For Post Basic B. Sc. Nursing Course

 

Education Qualification For Post Basic B. Sc. Nursing programme:

Passed the Higher Secondary or Senior Secondary or Intermediate or 10+2 or an equivalent examination recognized by the university for this purpose. Those who have done 10+1 in or before 1986, will be eligible for admission.

And

Obtained a certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery and registered as R.N.R.M. with the State Nurses Registration Council. A male nurse, trained before the implementation of the new integrated course besides being registered as a nurse with State Nurses Registration Council, shall produce evidence of training approved by Indian Nursing Council for a similar duration in lieu of midwifery in any one of the following areas:

O.T. Techniques, Ophthalmic Nursing, Leprosy Nursing, TB Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Neurological and Neuro surgical Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Cancer Nursing, Orthopaedic Nursing

Duration of Post Basic B. Sc Nursing: 2 years regular and 3 years distance

Eligibility and Duration For M. Sc. Nursing Course

The candidate should be a Registered Nurse and Registered midwife or equivalent with any State Nursing Registration Council.

The Minimum education requirements shall be the passing of: B.Sc. Nursing/B.Sc. Hons. Nursing/Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing with minimum of 55% aggregate marks.

The candidate should have undergone in B.Sc. Nursing / B.Sc. Hons. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing.

 

Experience required for M. Sc Nursing Course:

Minimum one year of work experience after Basic B.Sc. Nursing.

OR

Minimum one year of work experience prior or after Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing.

Duration of MSc Nursing: 2 years

Mode of admission:

Exam conducted by University

Eligibility and Duration For M. Phil in Nursing

The Minimum education requirements shall be the passing of M. Sc. Nursing

Duration of M phil Nursing:

1 year (Full time)
2 years (part time)

Mode of admission:

Passing Percentage criteria and Entrance Exam as decided by University

Eligibility and Duration For PhD Nursing Course

The candidate should be a Registered Nurse and Registered midwife or equivalent with any State Nursing Registration Council.

The Minimum education requirements shall be the passing of M. Sc. Nursing

Duration of PhD Nursing: 3 -5 years
